Prof. Ciira wa Maina,the director of DSAIL, delivered a keynote address at the Bowen Bat Conference 2023. Taking place between 3^rd and 6^th July this year, and hosted by Bowen University, the conference was centered around the theme "New Frontiers in Bat Research and Communication".This conference aimed to bring together researchers from various fields of bat study with the primary focus being the necessity for concerted efforts to demystify and enhance the conservation status of bats, particularly in Africa. This was pursued through collaborative research initiatives and effective communication strategies.

During the period between May and August, DSAIL provided attachment opportunities to undergraduate students, hosting a total of six individuals. These students were immersed in a range of skill areas, with a primary focus on hardware design, software development, data pipeline design, and machine learning. As part of their attachment experience, these students had the chance to delve into hands-on learning and gain practical insights. Their experiences culminated in moving presentations, where they shared their attachment journey and newfound knowledge. This event took place on the 4^th of August at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology.

Data serves as the cornerstone of machine learning models. Without data, models lack substance and evidence. However, the process of collecting data is a costly endeavor. Join Gabriel Kiarie from DSAIL as he reflects on his data collection expedition at Ol Pejeta Conservancy. His primary objective was to assess the effectiveness of a system he's been developing for detecting faults in electric fences using Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR).
