The AfricAI Conference 2023

A team from DSAIL attended and presented at the AfricAI conference, which took place in Kigali, Rwanda between June 11 th and 14 th, 2023. Organized by the IDRC, GIZ, and Niyel, and under the theme of advancing responsible and open AI ecosystems in Africa, this inaugural conference focused on data privacy, bias mitigation, and algorithmic transparency. It aimed to shape the future of AI by forging alliances and collaborations among stakeholders. The team from DSAIL, in collaboration with representatives from Busitema University, Uganda, demonstrated cutting-edge hardware and sensor systems, showcasing thes value of bringing together diverse stakeholders to explore new possibilities in AI. As Africa embraces the transformative power of AI, conferences like AfricAI provide a crucial platform for driving innovation, ethical practices, and inclusive development in the AI landscape.

Smart Agriculture Training

Gabriel Kiarie from DSAIL was invited to conduct a training for agricultural extension officers from Mombasa County on Smart Agriculture from June 22nd to 25th, 2023. The training, facilitated in collaboration with Ms. Hilda Manzi of Geo-Spatial Research International, aimed to disseminate knowledge on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in agriculture. Gabriel showcased IoT devices developed by DSAIL specifically for the agricultural sector, highlighting their potential to enhance farming practices. The training focused on promoting the understanding and application of smart agriculture for sustainable and efficient farming in Mombasa County.


Visiting Interns from IASTE Exchange Program

DSAIL is thrilled to welcome two visiting interns through the IASTE Exchange Program. Safa Ayed, a student pursuing a bachelor's degree in Automation and IT Engineering from the National Institute of Applied Sciences and Technology (INSAT) in Tunisia, and Markus Hoff, from Bergen, Norway, pursuing an MSc in Industrial Economics and Technology Management with a specialization in ML and real options at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NUST), Norway. We are delighted to have both Safa and Markus join our team for their summer internships. Safa will contribute to our RHD project, while Markus will bring his insights to the Bioacoustics project. We are excited to see the impact of their collaboration with DSAIL team members. Their presence and expertise promise to bring fresh perspectives and drive innovation within our ongoing projects.


Introducing DSAIL Tutorials - "Deploying Machine Learning Models on Embedded Systems."

We are excited to launch DSAIL Tutorials on our website, featuring the first tutorial led by Austin Kaburia titled "Deploying Machine Learning Models on Embedded Systems." This comprehensive course will guide you through utilizing Arduino Nano 33 BLE Sense and Open MV Cam H7 to deploy machine learning models for various applications. You will learn about hardware setup, image classification, and object detection using the Edge Impulse interface, enabling you to train models capable of recognizing objects. Additionally, the tutorial explores the Open MV Cam H7's face detection system. Join us for an immersive learning experience and unlock the potential of embedded machine learning.
