Collaborations

At DSAIL we are keen on collaborating with other researchers on various research topics in Data Science, Machine Learning and IoT. One of the research partners we are currently working with is the ML@CL – Cambridge group lead by Prof Neil Lawrence. Recently as a result of the relationship between ML@CL and DSAIL, a lab-visit invitation was extended to Jason Kabi- a researcher at DSAIL. At the University Cambridge, Jason got a chance to interact and exchange ideas with the ML@CL group members and also check out the standards of AI research in a world-class institution. As a highlight, he also attended and participated in the inaugural Turing AI Fellows Community Hackathon 2023 where he got to interact with other researchers from other universities in the UK.

From Theory to Practice Conference

The “From Theory to Practice” workshop was held at the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) campus in Rwanda from 24th to 28th April. The workshop brings together researchers from academia and industry and aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice in data science. This year, our Director Prof. Ciira Maina gave a presentation on the use of “Gaussian Processes for Anomaly Detection in Spatial Fields”. This work is part of a collaboration with Prof Tom Dietterich and Irené Tematelewo of Oregon State University aimed at developing data quality control methods for weather data collected from networks of weather stations. The work is being applied to data collected by the Trans-African Hydro-Meteorological Observatory (TAHMO) network.

Etching Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs)

Blog pic

Etching is a subtractive method used for the production of etched circuit boards: acid is used to remove unwanted copper from a prefabricated laminate. This is done by applying a temporary mask that protects parts of the laminate from the acid and leaves the desired copper layer untouched. In this blog post, Jason Kabi explains the etching process, showcasing how he uses it in Hardware design.
